The design of crane grab bucket depends on the volume of the material to be lifted and the cycle time for transporting raw materials to other production lines. Industries such as cement and sugar refining, as well as many others, require grabs to handle bulk raw materials to ensure material supply. Grab types include hydraulic, remote-controlled, mechanical, and electric, and can be customized to meet customer needs.
Grabs can also be used with bridge cranes and are suitable for various industrial applications.
Mechanical grabs on various cranes are equipped with two sets of motor drums (motor hoists). Each set of motor drums guides two wire ropes. One set of wire ropes is fixed to a balance frame for support, while the other set passes through upper and lower beam pulleys, forming a pulley block that serves as the grab’s opening and closing mechanism.
At the start of operation, the support wire ropes lift the grab to the predetermined position. Then, the support ropes are tightened, and the grab body opens using the weight of the lower beam shaft as the center point. The grab body opens to its maximum extent when the contact plates of the two lugs collide. When the grab bucket opens, the center distance between the upper and lower beam pulleys increases. Then, the support rope is lowered, and the opened grab bucket falls onto the captured material, retracting around the opening and closing rope, restoring the center distance between the upper and lower beam pulleys to its initial position. This completes the material grabbing process. Finally, the opening and closing rope and support rope are simultaneously raised, lifting the entire grab bucket, and it is moved to the unloading area to unload the material according to the crane’s instructions.
